Tool and Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan said in an interview earlier this week with Louisville, Kentucky radio station WTFX he has “no idea” which band he will record his next album with. Keenan is currently on tour with Puscifer behind last year’s Money Shot record, while the instrumental members of Tool are working in Los Angeles on music for their long-delayed fifth studio effort.
Puscifer heads to Europe at the end of May and is there through late June, after which Keenan returns to his winemaking business in Sedona, Arizona. He told the radio station, “After Europe, it’s harvest time, so I’ll be in the cellar for three or four months.”
- Keenan told us which times of the year he needs to take off to tend to his vineyard: [“I usually need two weeks on and off throughout late winter, early spring just to kind of get bottling and blending going. But other than that, it’s basically mid-July to mid-October — and sometimes, you know, the beginning of November — is kind of the blackout dates when I can’t really tour.”] SOUNDCUE (:17 OC: . . . can’t really tour.)
- Keenan currently owns Merkin Vineyards and the associated winery, Caduceus Cellars, both of which are located in Arizona.
- Tool’s webmaster recently posted online that the band is “trying to outdo themselves” with the music for their new album, which will follow 2006’s 10,000 Days.
- While a large portion of the music for the new Tool disc has reportedly either been completed or is near completion, Keenan has yet to begin writing lyrics and melodies. There is no start date yet for recording to commence.
SIDE NOTES: As someone noted online, if Maynard is going “in the cellar” for four months and won’t re-emerge until September or October, that means he won’t be doing any writing of lyrics and melodies for Tool until this fall — assuming that the band has finished with all the music. That pretty much means that you can kiss the idea of hearing a new Tool album in 2016 goodbye.
