Ghost has unveiled a new clip titled “The Summoning VI: The Proceedings Intensify” following the release of the band’s new Popestar EP and the launch of a new North American headlining tour. But if this clip is anything to go by, not all is well in Ghost’s strange occult world. Despite the band’s success in spreading the word of Satan to the masses, the dreaded Sister Imperator admonishes the band’s Nameless Ghouls in the video for their failure to focus even harder on their mission.

The Sister rages at the Ghouls for giving “insipid” interviews and answering “insipid” questions, all while hiding their true identities, before telling the mysterious musicians that they are supposed to lead their fans “into the murky light of the shadow.” She finally berates them for being afraid of “real change” and for relying too much on singer Papa Emeritus III to spread their unholy message.

  • The latest vessel for Ghost’s message is the current single from Popestar, called “Square Hammer,” which a Nameless Ghoul told us was written at the tail end of the sessions for the band’s Meliora album: [“It was conceived around the end of the conception of Meliora, but I guess by then Meliora had — the conceptual aspects of it was already in place and ‘Square Hammer’ felt like a different song. So we basically saved it until a rainy day, and that rainy day came a few months later and we recorded it.”]
  • Popestar became the first EP ever to top the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart when it was released last month.
  • In addition to “Square Hammer,” the set features covers of songs by Echo & The Bunnymen, Eurythmics and others.
  • The Swedish act plans to record the follow-up to 2015’s Grammy-winning Meliora next spring, with a tentative released planned for the fall of 2017.
