Godsmack frontman Sully Erna revealed in a new interview with iRockRadio.com that the band is planning to release a movie about the group to coincide with its 20th anniversary in 2018. Erna hinted at the plans for the movie while discussing the influence of Rush drummer Neil Peart on his life and career.

Asked if he had ever had the chance to speak with Peart, Erna said, “I’ve met him a few times. We’ve actually become friends. As a matter of fact, we’ve been filming along the way, over the last couple of years, what will be, at some point, 20 years of Godsmack, a movie, and just interviewing different people along the way, and we got Neil Peart to agree to… I think we might have the last Neil Peart interview on tape.”

  • Erna added, “He actually reviewed our drum solo, and it was really very surreal to hear Neil Peart talking about me and Shannon (Larkin, drummer) and how well he enjoyed it and the technical aspects of it and how entertaining it was. And it was pretty cool.”
  • Erna and Larkin’s “drum solo battle” has been a feature of Godsmack’s live show for years. Erna told us that he always felt the music was more important to the band’s live show than a big production: [“We know that this band holds up live, we know that this band has great songs that we deliver. It’s very interactive with the audience. There’s a lot of sing-alongs, things like that, and so we don’t really need that stuff. We’d just done it because we were always a fan of that kind of big show, and we grew up with Aerosmith and Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.”]
  • Godsmack is planning to enter the studio at the end of next year to begin recording a new album for an early 2018 release, also to coincide with the band’s 20th anniversary.
  • The band’s follow-up to 2014’s 1000hp will be its first effort for BMG, following a split with the band’s label home of nearly two decades, Republic/Universal.
