Stone Temple Pilots have pushed back on a report from Entertainment Tonight and a Denver TV station that the band has selected former X Factor contestant Jeff Gutt as its new singer. In a statement issued to Entertainment Weekly, an STP representative said, “The band has been rehearsing with several singers over the past few weeks. They haven’t made a decision yet.”
Entertainment Tonight reported that Gutt, an X Factor runner-up in season three who now goes by his full name of Jeffrey Adam Gutt, has been writing and recording new music in California with the members of STP for the past few months.
- A source added that the band was expected to tour next year, and was rehearsing both classic and new material.
- Gutt was mentored on The X Factor by Kelly Rowland and impressed the other judges with his covers of songs like “Creep,” “Dream On” and “Hallelujah.”
- For several months, Filipino-born singer John Borja had been hotly rumored to have won the frontman gig with the band. STP began searching for a new singer earlier this year through open auditions, narrowing down the contenders through a series of private sessions.
- The new vocalist will be the band’s third, following late original lead singer Scott Weiland and Linkin Park‘s Chester Bennington, who held the job from mid-2013 to late 2015, recording one EP with the group.
